Hendricks Chapel to co-Sponsor “Iftar Under the Moonlight” with Muslim Student Association and Muslim Student Life at SU

Muslims across the globe observe the Holy Month of Ramadan each year by fasting from dawn to dusk. On top of fasting during daylight hours, Ramadan is also about charity, empathy, building character, reflection, and strengthening our connection with God Almighty. This year, Ramadan began on Saturday, April 2.

Muslim Student Association and Muslim Student Life at Syracuse University, in partnership with Hendricks Chapel, cordially invite the campus community and the broader Syracuse community to “Iftar Under the Moonlight” on Tuesday, April 26.

Iftar is a Ramadan dinner to break the day of fasting together. One does not have to be Muslim to attend this event – we encourage everyone, with all different beliefs and backgrounds, to attend. Upcoming Spring Holidays at Hendricks Chapel

Over the months of April and May, many religious chaplaincies will celebrate holidays. From Easter and Holy Week, to Passover and Ramadan, it is a busy time for students of all faiths. Below is the schedule of events for the Chaplaincies over the course of these sacred times…

 

Muslim Chaplaincy

  • Ramadan begins at Sunset on Friday, April 1 and will last 30 days this year.
  • Iftars will take place in Hendricks Chapel’s Noble Room on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings during the Holiday.
  • Monday, May 2 – Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated with a Service in the Main Chapel at 9:30 AM, and will be followed by an Eid Brunch in the Noble Room.

First Night Seder, Friday April 15

Second Night Seder, Saturday April 16

Three Options for Second Night Seder:

  1. A Hillel-hosted Seder will take place at the Winnick Hillel Center (102 Walnut Place). Doors open @ 5:30, Seder begins at 6 PM.
  2. Students can join for just the dinner @ Winnick Hillel Center following the Seder (approximately 6:45 PM).
  3. Students can host their own Seder. It does not matter if there are 2 or 20 people, Hillel will provide up to $10/person for students who host their own Passover seder/meal. Hillel will send a reimbursement in the week after Seder.

Meals Available

Hillel will offer two Kosher-for-Passover meals per day throughout the holiday.

  • Lunch will be served from 11 AM – 2 PM and Dinner will be served from 5 PM – 7 PM. Please visit the Winnick Hillel Center to receive these meals.

The Mask of Masculinity: An Evening with Wade Davis

It is with great excitement that Hendricks Chapel, in partnership with the White Ribbon Campaign at Vera House, will host “The Mask of Masculinity: An Evening with Wade Davis” on Thursday March 24, from 7-9 PM in the Main Chapel. The White Ribbon Campaign invites, equips and empowers men and boys as leaders in creating and sustaining healthy relationships in households and communities. Through education, advocacy, and philanthropy, we invite White Ribbon Campaign participants to actively promise each other a world that is free of violence and abuse.

“I believe in the mission, vision and values of Vera House, and I continue to be inspired by the dedication of their staff and supporters,” said Dean Brian Konkol, who has served as the co-chair of the White Ribbon Campaign for three years. “I am proud to share that Syracuse University is a longstanding contributor, and I can personally attest to the tremendous impact of such collective efforts in service to our local community and far beyond.”

We are very fortunate and excited to welcome former NFL player and current Vice President at Netflix Wade Davis to our Chapel on March 24. Wade will speak on the important topic of “The Mask of Masculinity,” opening our community up to an important conversation of what masculinity truly is. Wade works to engage, educate, and empower men to better understand the attitudes and actions that are most associated with aspirational masculinity. As he describes his journey, we know Wade will aid in unlocking the potential of men and boys in our community by seeking a world free from violence and abuse.

Music that Makes Community Workshop on Feb. 19

On Friday, Feb. 19, our student group Campus Connect will be hosting a workshop with Music that Makes Community, a nonprofit based in St. Louis, MO.

You’re invited to learn how to build community through song and chant and how to use it during protests, youth development, and much more! The workshop will go from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., with four sessions about song leading and paperless music. You can come to all, or for however long you have time for. Sign up using this Google Form!

Hendricks Chapel Choir and company to perform Calvar’s Mass of Reconciliation

The Hendricks Chapel Choir will collaborate with the Syracuse University Singers, the vocal jazz ensembles from the Setnor School of Music, and singers from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam to perform our own Peppie Calvar’s Mass of Reconciliation for Mixed Chorus, Soloists, and Big-Band Jazz Orchestra as part of the Malmgren Concert Series at Hendricks Chapel on Thursday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The jazz orchestra will be comprised of six national-quality jazz instrumentalists in collaboration with Syracuse University jazz faculty and four students from the Setnor School of Music’s Jazz and Commercial Music program chaired by John Coggiola. Calvar’s Mass of Reconciliation received its Syracuse premiere at Hendricks Chapel in 2015, and it has since been played at major venues including Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, and venues at Temple University and Coastal Carolina University among others. The piece presents new music not necessarily for liturgical use but, rather, for marrying the church’s rich artistic and textual heritage most commonly associated with traditional Western Classical music with modern musical elements including jazz, funk, and Latin popular styles. It also offers a rare opportunity for jazz instrumentalists to collaborate with choral artists. The performance will also feature vocal solos from our own Dean Brian Konkol, and Marianne Solivan, Assistant Professor of Jazz Voice.

José “Peppie” Calvar is Associate Professor Assistant Director of Choral Activities at Syracuse University, and he serves as director of the Hendricks Chapel Choir and as artistic director of Holidays at Hendricks.

A visit inside the DreamSpace at Hendricks Chapel

Enter the DreamSpace, a new interactive experience inside Hendricks Chapel, and you begin to feel the rest of the world recede.

The space is designed to bring you into intentional reflection. The lights are dimmed to minimize distraction and help you feel relaxed. Comfortable and casual seating calms you down, and brings out your curiosity. Twinkle lights and starry rugs evoke the essence of dreams.

But you don’t want to fall asleep, not at all. All around you are prompts to bring you deeper within yourself. First, you listen to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech given at Sims Hall at Syracuse University in 1965. As you listen, you watch the many faces of the man himself throughout his life, and begin to realize that the dream is much more than a dream — it’s a call to action, a fervent and living prayer. Next, you tune in to learn how Syracuse University students are impacted by King’s legacy, and what inspires them to continue the work. Finally, it’s time to reflect on how you are a living part of King’s vision for the future. What role do you play in creating a world where all men are created — and treated — equal?

Stop by the dream space anytime throughout the month of February to celebrate the legacy of MLK and Black History Month as we ask ourselves the question: How can we be a part of the dream?

This interactive, reflective space is located in the Strates Room, across from the Dean’s Suite in the lower level, and is open from Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5pm.

 

Students invited to Spring 2022 service and mission trips with Christian Outreach

Christian Outreach, a student religious and spiritual life group of Hendricks Chapel, is offering students four alternative break service and mission trips during Spring 2022.

Three options for spring break include service trips to work with underserved youth in the Bronx or respond to tornado damage in Kentucky, and a mission trip to provide spiritual care to spring breakers on South Padre Island, Texas. The group will also return to Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, in May 2022 to support long-term disaster relief and community development.

All Syracuse University and SUNY-ESF students are welcome to participate. There will be an open interest and information meeting on Jan. 30 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Noble Room of Hendricks Chapel, which all are invited to.

Applications are now available online and are due Sunday, Feb. 6 at 11:59 p.m. Please note: Applying does not commit you to attending.

Christian Outreach at Syracuse University has participated in disaster relief, crisis response and spiritual service trips for more than 10 years. One of their primary partners is Send Relief, who they will work with in Kentucky and Puerto Rico.

“Send Relief depends on the leadership of community organizers, like local pastors, to identify communities who need assistance and meet those specific needs,” says Baptist Campus Chaplain Devon Bartholomew.

Respond to an immediate relief need for those impacted by tornadoes in Kentucky by participating in debris clean-up, organizing donations and distributing goods to families in need.

Puerto Rico: May 21-27

Support local churches in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, with projects such as long term disaster relief, adoption & foster care support, church planting, and sustainable community development.

Pan Am Flight 103 Memorial Service to be held online Dec. 21

The Dean and Chaplains of Hendricks Chapel invite you to attend the annual Pan Am Flight 103 memorial service on Tuesday, December 21 at 2:03 p.m. ET on Zoom.

The service will honor the 270 people, including 35 Syracuse University study abroad students, who were killed when Pan Am Flight 103 was destroyed by a terrorist bomb over Lockerbie, Scotland on that date and time 33 years ago. Chaplains and Remembrance Scholars will offer prayers, reflections, and a reading of the names of the 35 students who were lost that day.

This service is offered in partnership with the Remembrance and Lockerbie Scholars, Hendricks Chapel and the Office of Alumni Engagement.
